Week of January 2

After enjoying a week off for the Christmas holiday, things were back in full swing! We got in a few boxes of new books, which is always fun.

We've also been having a LOT of indoor recess. During indoor recess the kids have been using some of our Makerspace things--blocks, Legos, games, circuits, and other fun things.

This week, our preschool & AK students read the Mr. Panda books by Steve Antony. The books teach about using manners & waiting patiently in such cute ways! The kids really like these books, and so do I! I hope there is another one in the works!

Kindergarteners started a unit of Fairy Tales by reading The Gingerbread Man. After reading, we discussed different ways for the gingerbread man to cross the water without the fox. Kids talked about boats, bridges, and floating across on logs. After our discussion, kids tried to build their ideas using blocks, Legos, magnetic blocks, K'nex, or plastic tubes & cardboard pieces. We have some amazing engineers in kindergarten!

First graders read a non-fiction book called Firetrucks using our Mackinvia e-books. These kids are such great readers--they read it to me instead of me reading it to them!

Second graders continued in our Mock Caldecott unit--only 2 weeks left until we find out the winner! This week we read Horrible Bear by Ame Dyckman & Zachariah O'Hora and They All Saw a Cat by Brendan Wenzel.
Ame Dyckman is an amazing lady, and she sent us bookmarks and stickers of Horrible Bear for all the students! That might win over some votes, ha!

During computer lab, they used Google Drawings to draw a picture of a cat. They turned out so cute!

Third graders started a new biography unit by looking through an assortment of biographies, and determining important things that seem to be in most biographies. Then we made a list & each student selected a person to start studying next week. I'm looking forward to starting our first major research project this year!

Fourth graders began working on their book trailer project. Over break, they were supposed to read one book that they could make a trailer about. This week, we started writing the script and making a storyboard, which is truly the hardest part, as it requires some creative thinking!

Primos supervised Mrs. Novotny's class on Thursday!

Also, here is the photo album from our 4th grade state museum from before break! It is always so fun to showcase their hard work.
