Week of October 29

We had a fun Halloween week here in the library! It was kind of a slower week, because of schedules and Fall parties, but we were able to get caught up on lots of projects and have some fun! Our volunteers had fun building these Halloween book stacks, too!

Preschoolers listened to the story Big Pumpkin by Erica Silverman. It's a really fun cumulative story about a witch and her friends and a pumpkin pie!

AK students listened to one of our brand new books called The Golden Glow by Benjamin Flouw. I first read this book this summer, and I knew right away that I had to get it for our library. The illustrations in this book are absolutely brilliant--the best I've seen in a book in a long time. It also blends some non-fiction into the cute story...I just love it!

Kindergartners were the first class of the year (in library, at least) to complete a Breakout Box! We did the Monster Mash Jr. game by Patti Harju and had so much fun! I changed the story up a little bit, and told the kids that there had been some monsters lurking in our school and that they must have locked up the candy I had hoped to give the kids in the box. They had fun looking for the clues and then putting them together to unlock all the locks!

First graders were supposed to do a project with the weather they researched last week, but we had a little issue with our WiFi on our iPads...so, instead, we read Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds. It's such a fun book. Mrs. Huinker's class had just read it, so their class read the follow up book, Creepy Pair of Underwear.

Second graders are getting ready to start non-fiction, but we had a week between lessons, so I thought I'd read them one of my favorite newer spooky books, The X Files: Earth Children are Weird by Kim Smith. This is another book that I just love. The twist at the end makes every kid go, "Whhhaaattt?!" and I just giggle every time. This is also a blast from my middle/high school years, so that makes me enjoy it all the more.

Third graders read another chapter in A Boy Called Bat and read an article about keeping skunks as pets. They shared their thoughts about owning a pet skunk on Edmodo.

Fourth graders finished up their digital footprint posters. We printed out their images and their explanations and they cut them out and mounted them on a piece of scrapbook paper. They are now on display in the hallway for parents to look at and discuss during conferences.

The next couple of weeks we'll have the book fair set up for conferences! Fall is going so fast!

Crazy February

What a winter! I haven't updated in a long time, because well, we haven't been in school for a long time! This past week we actually...
