All of our students (except 2 kindergarten classes) were able to come to the library for a little book care review and a check out time. Here are a few snapshots:
I also spotted a few students "reading in the wild" this week--mostly in the gym before school and one out at recess! I love seeing kids read in the moments when reading is what they are choosing to do, even though they could be doing something else.
There are a few new things in the library this year that I've been working on over the summer. We have two new sections in our genre-fied library. One of the things I love most about not having to follow the Dewey Decimal System is the freedom it gives to really meet the needs of our building.
Our Spanish teacher requested that the library have more Spanish/English titles, so I just added a whole new section! I labeled it EspaƱol instead of Spanish because there wasn't an extra shelf in-between Rhymes and Sports, but there just happened to be room by the Entertainment and Family books! So, kind of a silly reason, but I think it'll work out. There aren't a lot of books there yet, but we'll keep filling it up.
The other new section that we've got is called Book Clubs, and it will be in the fiction section. This is a place where I've started putting 2-4 copies of out of our guided reading collection for students to use to read together. Last year, we had some 3rd graders that were obsessed with reading together, and we didn't have enough options for them. Hopefully this will help!
Another addition to our library this year is a fish tank! I had a fish tank in my previous library, and I really missed having it. So we've now got 5 fish and a snail that all the students (and me) are obsessed with watching!
I also added some new decor in our story corner. Here's what it currently looks like:
